Columbia is the second of the OV-200 series Shuttles built by the Soviet Air Force and Hephaestus Foundry. The Orbiter was built as a replacement for the original Columbia, the first operational Orbiter, which was destroyed in a reentry incident in 2003.

History

The Orbiter was purchased by VVS EXFOR as part of their continuing expansion. The Artemis Foundation had placed an initial bid for the vehicle, but the VVS invoked privileges in the licensing agreement with Hephaestus in order to secure the OV-202 vehicle as their "pick of the litter." The short bidding war (and attendant alpha-fen posturing between factions leaders Noah Scott and Mal Fnord) sparked several memorable editorial cartoons and filks before the two patched things up.

Columbia was activated at Hephaestus on 14 November 2014, and had a public rollout along with the new Starfleet flagship USS Enterprise on 15 November. Her shakedown mission was a trans-Neptunian object survey sponsored by KARI.

Known Vehicle Quirks

  • Good Morning Starshine II(b): The OV-200 class quirk; Columbia needs a song played at the beginning of each workday. In Columbia's case, she requires a folk or folk-rock song every day or systems performance will degrade by 5% daily to a maximum degredation of 75%.[1]
  • The Penguin Reborn: Columbia is very conscious that she was created to continue A Legacy, and the knowledge of this Legacy sometimes drives her to act recklessly, especially in face of new discoveries.
  • Just Being Careful: Instead of simply driving down like any other fenship or even the other Orbiters, Columbia must spend at least a half hour checking and rechecking systems before attempting to land anywhere there's an atmosphere.

Notes

  1. Luckily, her captain and co-pilot have what might be the largest collection of American and Canadian folk-rock anywhere in the Solar System.
