Background
UNOOSA is a UN agency created in 1962 for the purposes of promoting international cooperation in the peaceful uses of outer space. UNOOSA served as the secretariat for the General Assembly's only committee dealing exclusively with international cooperation in the peaceful uses of outer space: the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS).
With access to space becoming essentially uncontrolled with the advent of the 'wave UNOOSA's mandate has changed somewhat. As of 2010 and the signing of the treaty of Kandor UNOOSA has become the UN's main contact with Fenspace. This is partially because, as of 2015 no members of the UN[1] have reconized Fenspace as a nation and Fenspace is, therefore, not itself a member of the United Nations.
Utimately this is because Fenspace is far too chaotic and has no permenant government structure[2]. There is of course the Convention but it doesn't have officers in a traditional sense[3] and operates in a manner significantly different than most known governments.
UNOOSA and to a lesser extent COPUOS were major contributors to the 'daneside negotiations at Kandor.
In 2010 the ISS was completed, demed more or less obsolete and irrelevant by her builders and given over to UNOOSA who ran it until 2014 when their money began to run out and they made a deal with the Artemis Foundation.
During the Boskone War UNOOSA was largely irrelevant. None of the beligerants were fighting in the teritory of UN members and while the UN of course deplored slavery they[4] were not very happy with the crazy kids upstairs waving around guns and forming a militia.
COPUOS was, of course, officially rather put out by all this violence.
Fenish Opinions on UNOOSA
The vast majority of Fen tend to not think about the UN or its agencies from day to day. Although there is strong support for some UN programs such as UNICEF, for the most part the everyFan sees the UN as more or less irrelevant and some what innefective at the more important parts of its job.
UNOOSA itself has some support for those Fen who are interested in the mundane space programs for its keeping the ISS from dieing. But it is generally seen as a way for the SMOFs to deal with the 'dane governments as a whole and it should really be bothering the SMOFs and not me.
